Dr. Innocent Afeke is a Lecturer in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). He is a certified international member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, USA, and a fellow of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists and Black Microbiologist Association.
Education
He had both his BSc. in Biochemistry and MPhil. in Microbiology at the University of Ghana, Legon, and PhD in Infection Biology from the University of Lübeck, Germany with a German cum laude of 1.8.
Work Experience
Innocent Afeke worked as a research assistant/laboratory technologist at Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana, for 10 years. During this period, he worked on the following projects: the Anti-malaria Drug Evaluation Study (sponsored by DANIDA); the SAVVY-Ghana Project (a phase III effectiveness trial of a microbicide gel on HIV infections) [USAID-funded]; the Malaria Vaccine Phase II Clinical Trial Study (sponsored by NIH); and the Reservoir and Mode of Transmission of Mycobacterium ulcerans Project (sponsored by the Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad (VLIR), Belgium]. He was sponsored by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) to pursue his PhD degree in Germany.
Science/Research Output
Dr. Afeke’s area of research is infectious diseases, especially microbe-host-interactions. He is interested in antimicrobial resistance, hospital-acquired infections in intensive care units, sexually transmitted infections, maternal and child health, and neglected tropical diseases. He is involved in several ongoing pieces of research at the University of Health and Allied Sciences. He has many scientific publications to his credit and has presented at several local and international conferences and is a reviewer for over 8 international peer review journals.
