Emmanuel Allotey is an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana.
Education
He had his Medical Laboratory Science training at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and later a Master of Philosophy degree in Haematology at the University of Ghana, Legon. He is currently a PhD fellow at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, a fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science, and Haematology Training Coordinator for the Ghana College of Medical Laboratory Science.
Work Experience
Prior to his appointment to UHAS, he was a part-time lecturer at the School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences of the University for Development Studies and also a Senior Biomedical Laboratory Scientist and Head of the Haematology Unit of the Diagnostics Department of the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Whiles with the University for Development Studies, he taught haematology for Level 200, 300 and the Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science classes (Level 500 and 600). He also worked with Medlab Ghana Limited (2006-2008) at their Immunochemistry and Haematology units and was a lead examinee (for haematology) for ISO (15189) Accreditation (The first laboratory in the country to achieve this feat). He also worked as a laboratory consultant (haematology) for the company for about a year after he left for Tamale Teaching Hospital in May 2008.
Science/Research Output
Mr. Allotey’s area of research is haemolytic anaemias but with particular interest in Sickle Cell research and currently investigating the role of the gut microbiome in sicklce cell crisis. He has authored eight (8) publications in peer-reviewed journals.
