Dr. Cecilia Smith is a Lecturer at the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Health and Allied Health Sciences, Ho. She is a licensed medical laboratory scientist and a consultant cytotechnologist.
Education
She obtained a certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology from School of Medical Laboratory Technology at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra. She proceeded to University of Ghana to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, and subsequently obtained a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Pathology from University of Ghana Medical School. Ms. Smith has completed a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, University of Ghana.
Work Experience
Before her appointment at UHAS, she was an assistant lecturer at University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS). Dr. Smith worked as a medical laboratory technician in Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and was upgraded to biomedical laboratory scientist and head of the cytology unit of the department of Pathology after her first degree. She was later promoted to Senior Biomedical Laboratory Scientist. After her second degree, she was appointed an assistant lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) for three years.
Technically, she has experience in Cytotechnology, Histotechnology, Florescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH), Immunohistochemistry, Flow cytometry, and also has been exposed to some molecular techniques
Science/Research Output
Dr. Smith’s main research area is Cancer Pathogenesis with special affinity for neglected tropical (Schistosomiasis) and respiratory (Asthma) diseases. She is currently working on molecular understanding of pathogenesis and immune response in endemic Burkitt lymphoma. She also has a number of publications in peer reviewed journals.
Professionally, she is a Foundation Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science and a Fellow of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, where she is the training coordinator of the Cytopathology expert panel. She is also a member of African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) and American Association of Cancer Research (AACR).
