THE OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences is a leading academic unit dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and professional practice. As a pivotal part of the School of Allied Health Sciences, the Department is committed to training skilled professionals who contribute to advancing global healthcare through diagnostic excellence and innovative research.

 

The Department takes pride in being the second institution in Ghana to offer the esteemed Doctor of Medical Laboratory Sciences programme. This rigorous six-year programme is meticulously designed to cultivate high skilled professionals who will drive excellence in the healthcare sector. The current four-year BSc Medical Laboratory Sciences programme will be phased out by 2027. Students currently enrolled in the programme will be allowed to complete their studies, but no new admissions will be made after the transition plan takes effect. This change is part of the Department’s strategic efforts to align with evolving academic and professional standards. Furthermore, our Department offers MPhil and PhD in Medical Laboratory Sciences, providing advanced academic training that empowers individuals to pursue impactful careers in academia, research and industry.

The Department is actively engaged in cutting-edge research with a strong focus on addressing pressing healthcare challenges.  

Research areas include; Microbiome studies, antimicrobial resistance, development of innovative diagnostic tools for infectious and non-communicable diseases, cancer research, malaria, HIV, neglected tropical diseases, cardiovascular diseases, sexual dysfunction and others. The Department fosters collaborations with national and international institutions to enhance the scope and impact of its research endeavours.
