Emmanuel Akomanin Asiamah is an Assistant Lecturer at the School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho. He is a faculty member of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, where he is responsible for the teaching of general pathology, histopathology diagnostic techniques and cytotechnology. He is a licensed Medical Laboratory Scientist and a Laboratory Consultant.
Education
He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2003, a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management from the Institute of Commercial Management (ICM-UK) in 2010 and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences (Cellular Pathology) from the University of Westminster, London in 2012, where he was also appointed as a postgraduate histology demonstrator. He is currently enrolled at the Department of Molecular Medicine, KNUST as a doctoral student with research focus on immunopathology and immunotherapy.
Work Experience
Prior to his appointment at UHAS in November 2016, Mr. Asiamah was an adjunct faculty at the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology at both KNUST and Garden City University College, and also practiced as a licensed Medical Laboratory Scientist at the Pathology Department of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he rose to the rank of Deputy Chief Biomedical Scientist.
He has extensive experience in teaching, research and consulting in histopathological and cytopathological techniques and other advanced diagnostic application systems such as immunohistochemistry, Insi-tu Hybridization, flow cytometry, genomics and proteomics, which he had gained over a decade of diagnostic laboratory practice and clinical research, both locally and abroad, including University Hospital of North Norway (UNN), Tromso and University College London Hospitals (UCLH), Advanced Diagnostics Lab. In addition, he served as focal technical personnel for the Ghana Breast Health Study (GBHS) project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital study site, which was a collaborative research between Ministry of Health and the National Cancer Institutes of the United States of America.
Scientific /Research Output
Emmanuel Akomanin Asiamah has been involved in the toxicological analysis of herbal extracts for a number of traditional medicines on the market, and has a number of publications in peer reviewed journals. Other key research interests include profiling of novel biomarkers for early detection of breast and cervical cancers as well as the development of prognostic biomarkers for targeted therapy. He also pioneered the UHAS Pathology Laboratory Consultancy Service Initiative, which provides diagnostic service to the university community as well as its affiliate, Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH), which has generated vital clinical data for cancer research.
He is a foundation fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS), fellow of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), elected member of the National Society of Histotechnology (NSH), USA and member of African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM).
