Mr. Sylvester Yao Lokpo is an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana. He is also a Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist with a specialty in Chemical Pathology and a Fellow of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists.
Education
He obtained his Bachelor of Science Medical Laboratory Technology and Master of Philosophy Chemical Pathology degrees respectively from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP) from the School of Public Health, University of Ghana. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy program in Chemical Pathology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Work Experience
He has extensive clinical laboratory experience spanning over 12 years of practice. He started as an Intern Medical Laboratory Scientist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in 2003. He then joined the Ghana Health Service in 2005 where he was posted to the District Hospital, Sogakope and later became a Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist and the Laboratory Manager until November, 2014. During this period, he provided consultancy services to some private health institutions within the Volta Region and beyond. He was reposted to the Ho Municipal Hospital where he rose to become a Principal Medical Laboratory Scientist. He joined the Volta Regional Hospital in June, 2016 and worked at the Clinical Biochemistry Unit for 5 months before he joined the University of Health and Allied Sciences. Until his appointment into academia, he has served as a trained Preceptor for Medical Laboratory Science students of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. He is currently the Assistant Vocational Training Coordinator for the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences at the University.
Research Interest/Output
He has research interests in Diabetes, Hypertension, Anthropometry, Inflammation, Oxidative Stress and Endothelial Dysfunction. He has a number of scientific publications to his credit and is involved in several on-going research projects at the University of Health and Allied Sciences. He is currently investigating into the performance of markers of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction as predictors of cardiovascular risk among Ghanaians with Type 2 Diabetes.
